Call for Abstracts 2020
“A Horse is a Horse, of Course!?” – 4th International Symposium promoting the safety, care and well-being of equines in Animal Assisted/Facilitated Psychotherapy and Learning Programs.
In consideration of and true to maintaining the ethics and guidelines of equine welfare and well-being, NO horses will be part of the symposium, and presentations will NOT include horses.
It’s that time again: Don’t miss the chance to present at the next “A Horse is a Horse, of Course!?” International Symposium and/or be added to the 2020 compendium!
You are invited to submit your chapters and apply to present at the next Symposium. Material should be relevant to the Equine Assisted/Facilitated field and be an original contribution, with particular focus on RESEARCH IN(TO) HORSE-HUMAN INTERACTIONS and/or SPECIFIC HORSE RELATED INFORMATION. Share your newest research, all with the focus on equines and their safety, wellbeing and welfare, with other practitioners in the industry, helping them to understand the new research and clinical practices
To put minds into motion to improve the safety, care and well-being of horses, donkeys and mules in equine interaction programs through science, compassionate inquiry, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
NOTE: by submitting a paper, you are consenting to:
- the content of your Symposium presentation – if you are selected to present – being live streamed and/or recorded;
- your presentation being published in the 2020 Compendium – please note that the Compendium is intended to be available before the Symposium; and
- all proceeds from the publication of the 2020 Compendium going to MiMer (www.mimercentre.org) to fund further research in equine intervention programs, for the benefit of horses and humans.
If your paper is chosen for inclusion in the 2020 Symposium and/or Compendium, you will be asked to sign a contributor agreement consenting to the above terms.
CONTENT OF CHAPTER SUBMISSIONS
All work must be original (except for material in the public domain, and material included with written permission of the copyright owners), and must not have been previously published. References must be included.
Papers must focus on issues pertaining to equine welfare and wellness, or on the role, safety and well-being of equines in the context of equine-assisted/facilitated interventions. Even if you are writing about a specific approach to equine assisted/facilitated psychotherapy or learning, your focus must be on the horses themselves to give them a voice.
The 2020 Symposium has two themes. You will need to choose the ONE that best fits your research and specify this under the title of your paper.
- Theme One: Equine science, welfare and ethics
This theme includes topics related to equine health, horsemanship, cognition, behavior, social upbringing, physiology, etc., drawing from the fields of cognitive science, biology and ethology. If you are submitting an article for Theme One, please include in your paper an explanation of why and how your research will benefit horses and support their wellbeing in equine interaction programs.
- Theme Two: Current research into the Horse-Human interaction, with particular focus on the welfare of the horse in Horse-Human interaction
Theme Two addresses the interactive process between horses and humans, and the effects of those interactions on all. Of particular interest is how the horses’ welfare is affected by and ensured for the horse-human interaction and the author’s recommendations based on the research findings.
If you are submitting a paper for Theme Two, please adhere to the following structure:
- Your view of horses: eg. sentient, reactive, flight animal, metaphor, abilities, functions, inner workings
- Your theoretical approach
- Your research hypothesis and research design
- Preliminary findings
- Further recommendations
- Microsoft Word
- Standard Letter or A4 paper
- Single-spaced Times New Roman size 12 font.
- Length: at least 8 pages – or longer if the author wishes for that.
- No pictures

Completed submissions must be received by June 1, 2020.
